Five Dead as Medical Helicopter Goes Down in Libya

(MENAFN) A medical evacuation helicopter crashed Monday at Libya's Al-Sarra base, claiming five lives as the aircraft returned from an emergency transport mission, Libyan media outlets confirmed.

The fatal incident unfolded approximately 300 kilometers (186 miles) from Kufra, a southeastern Libyan city, according to the al-Wasat news portal citing informed sources.

Casualties include two military transport service personnel and a hospital nurse from Kufra. The remaining fatalities were foreign nationals serving as the pilot and co-pilot, the report indicated.

The circumstances triggering the crash remain unclear, with no immediate information released regarding potential causes. Libyan government officials have not yet issued formal commentary on the deadly aviation accident.

The tragedy marks another fatal incident for Libya's medical aviation operations, which provide critical emergency services across the North African nation's vast desert terrain.
