MVP leads to health discoveries for Veterans like you
Participation in MVP is improving health care
Participation in VA’s Million Veteran Program (MVP) isimproving healthcare.
MVP is one of the largest and most representative research programs in the world, and its participants are entirely Veterans like you.
Veterans who participate in MVP help our discoveries apply to all, including Veterans who share similar health experiences, military exposures, backgrounds and genetics.
Thanks to the contributions of Veterans like you, research findings from MVP are helping move discoveries toward use in clinical care, which will improve health and wellness for all Veterans.
Early disease detection
Researchers used MVP data to identify DNA markers linked to conditions like cancer, anxiety disorders and peripheral artery disease, which can someday help doctors recognize who may be at higher risk before symptoms appear.
Improving cancer prediction
MVP researchers discovered a polygenic risk score that can potentially help doctors understand the risk of prostate cancer in male Veterans. These findings led to a clinical trial to see if adding the polygenic risk score to the standard screening process can improve identification of men who are at a higher risk of prostate cancer.
MVP researchers found that a genetic risk model can accurately predict breast cancer risk in women Veterans, which can lead to personalized screenings based on risk.
Detecting risk and preventing suicide
MVP researchers identified new risk factors for suicide that were incorporated into VA’s suicide-risk prediction tool, REACHVET 2.0, which helps clinicians detect Veterans at the highest risk for suicide and take action to treat them.
Treating chronic kidney disease (CKD)
Researchers found a genetic variant that increases risk of CKD and death in Veterans of African ancestry with COVID. Researchers also found a protective genetic variant in the same gene that led to drug repurposing opportunities and a clinical trial. This shows the power of MVP’s research to ultimately save lives.
These findings were made possible because of Veterans like you
Thank you to the 1 million+ Veterans who are changing the future of healthcare for all people.
All Veterans can become part of MVP today at a participating VA location.
